FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS OF THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE (FAQS)

How are Enrollment Verifications completed?
Students can print their own enrollment verifications through Banner Self Service. Students can also come to the Registrar’s Office with photo ID to obtain an enrollment verification in person. Employers or other companies that wish to verify student enrollment dates must have a signed release of the student. Enrollment verifications are done through US postal mail only.

How are student levels determined?

Students are given class designations (used to determine registration timeticket assignments) according to the number of credit hours they have earned (not including what is in progress). Undergraduate levels are:

Freshman:      0-29
Sophomores: 30-59
Juniors:         60-89
Seniors:        90 or more credit hours

How are registration timeticket (registration start dates) assignments assigned?

Students are assigned registration dates in order of their academic level standing (i.e. those with the most credits earned register first). All undergraduate students must be advised by their assigned advisor prior to their date assignment.

Where does a student get a copy of his/her schedule?

The student is able to view and print his/her semester schedule through the Banner system.

Where can a student get a copy of his/her grades?

Current students are able to/encouraged to view his/ her grades via the Degree Works audit system. They can also request a transcript (there is a transcript fee assessed for this service) through the Registrar's Office.

What options does the student have if a course is closed?

If a course is closed but has waitlist availability, and the student is eligible to take the course, he/she is given the option of joining the waitlist. Waitlist courses are displayed on the student's schedule along with the waitlist placement number. The number on the waitlist may change due to many reasons. If the student is moved to the top of the waitlist and a seat opens, he/she will receive a generated email alerting them to this fact. They then have a 24 hour period to login to Banner and enroll in this course. If they do not enroll in this window, they lose their spot in the waitlist and will have to start over.

When is the deadline for pass/fail, withdrawal from course, leave of absence and incomplete grades?

  • Pass/Fails Students should declare by the end of the seventh week of classes in any semester or by the end of the first half of classes in the summer
  • Withdrawal from Course - Submissions are due by the end of the 10th week of the semester or 2/3 of class days for the summer. If you have a HOLD (PDF) this form must be filled out.
  • Leave of Absence - submissions are due the Friday of the first week of classes to avoid financial penalty (during drop/add)
  • Incomplete Grades - Incomplete grades must be converted to a letter grade by the end of the tenth week of the following semester.

What does a student do if its past a deadline to hand in a form to the Registrar's Office?

Withdrawal from Course, online Pass/fail submissions, and Withdrawal/ Leave from University must be submitted by the published deadline.

These deadlines can be found on the Academic Calendar . After the deadline dates the student must file a petition if their course drops, withdrawals, leaves and pass/fails falls outside the deadline. Petitions can be filed at the office of Academic Standards, Twin Rise South Wing 510, 716-878-5222 or online.

How can a student receive verification that he/she is enrolled or has been enrolled at Buffalo State University?
Students can print off these verifications by logging into Banner.

How does a student change his/her name/address/phone number or SS#?
Student information is updated/changed at the Registrar's Office with proper documentation and student permission (signature). This form can be downloaded from the forms section of the Registrar's Website.

Where can students get information about class locations and advisors?
Course Questions: 
Students are directed to the department offering the course for answers to course questions that can not be answered in Banner.
Advisor Questions:
Students are assigned advisors and should be referred to that office/department for advisor questions/complaints.

When is the first day of classes?
The University senate determines the University schedule. All important dates and deadlines can be found on the Academic Calendar.

How does the student access their audit sheet?
The student's academic progress towards meeting graduation requirements is maintained by DegreeWorks. Copies of up to date audits may be printed for advisement purposes by logging into Degreeworks.

How can students make corrections to his/her audit sheet?
Necessary corrections or questions about the audit sheet information should be brought to the attention of his/her academic advisor.

Problems with student's transfer credits should be referred to the Admissions Office.

Course placement issues in the major can be resolved by working with your advisor in the department.
 

What are the academic requirements for graduation?

Students must meet all curricular requirements, they must have completed the prescribed curriculum for their major. If requirements have changed since they were admitted to a program they may choose to graduate under the old or the new requirements.

  1. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all coursework taken at the University. The minimum cumulative GPA for the major is also 2.0.
  2. All candidates must have completed the minimum of 45 Upper Division Credits which are considered the 300/400 level coursework generally.
  3. A minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed at the University.
  4. A minimum of 120 academic credit hours must be completed by most programs.
  5. Students are unable to graduate until all N, I, or X grades have been replaced with an appropriate letter grade.

How does a student get a copy of his/her transcripts?
